The New Jersey Devil

Date : June 6th, 2007

I’m not usually one to believe in scary stories and folklore, because I think most of the stories I hear are completely crazy and impossible. The same goes for the story of the New Jersey Devil. New York isn’t that far from New Jersey, so one would probably expect stories like this to freak me out, but they don’t. According to legend, the New Jersey Devil is a creature said to inhabit the Pine Barrens in southern New Jersey. This story supposedly started 18th century and involves a woman named Deborah Smith who immigrated from England to the Pine Barrens in southern New Jersey to marry a vain man named Mr. Leeds, who wanted several heirs to his family name.

After bearing twelve healthy children, she was angry when she became pregnant with her thirteenth child. Out of anger she cursed the unborn child, wishing that it be the Devil’s spawn instead of her husband’s. Her wish was granted. Crazy huh? I think that’s one of the craziest stories I’ve ever heard. I definitely don’t believe it, but it involves New Jersey and England, so I wanted to tell it.

Unlike the character in the 1408 Movie that’s coming out this month, I don’t want to find out whether something like this can happen. I don’t believe it and I’m not changing my mind. If you like scary stuff, I’m sure you’ll love the 1408 Movie because it addresses the supernatural and paranormal. Not to mention it’s based on a novel by Stephen King. Check out the trailer for the movie below.
